Joe Arnone - 2000 Montana Hill Climb, Missoula MT
Meet Joe Arnone
I have had a variety of life experiences that have shaped my product development ideas. At the same time, my experience and knowledge will be invaluable as I lead OUR community throughout it’s development and success.
I started my athletic career running high school track and cross country in Kalispell, Montana. I ran a 4:42 mile which was just an indicator of my athletic abilities. During the summer of 1978, a friend and I rode our bicycles from Montana to San Francisco. It was a turning point for me, as it fueled my passion for cycling.
My affinity for cycling continued while I attended Montana State University. Here, my passion for road cycling began to take shape. I spent more time cycling around southwest Montana than I did studying, much to the detriment of my grade point average. Regardless, I graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology in the summer of 1985 and throughout I managed to develop as a cyclist, graduate college and complete Air Force ROTC where I earned a pilot slot.
During Air Force Pilot Training in Columbus, Mississippi I kept developing my cycling abilities. The best cyclist in the state at the time lived in Columbus and we met up on a training ride one day. For the next 3 years I spent many miles cross-eyed trying to stay on his wheel while I continued to improve. I knew absolutely nothing about sports nutrition which made the suffering even worse. Many times I bonked to the point of needing to stop to get a fruit pie and a soda just to be able to crawl the last 10 miles home. I continued to get faster, to the point that I was beating my training partner regularly by the time I left Mississippi.
At the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs I was assigned as an instructor pilot. As soon as I told my Dad I was moving there, he went to work building my track bike. I raced on the Velodrome for the first time shortly after arriving in Colorado Springs. I developed further as a cyclist to the point of becoming a Category 1 on both the road and track in the early 1990’s. I won the Colorado Time Trial in 1991 and I was second in 1992 by only 9 seconds. The gentleman that won was selected to the 1992 U.S. Olympic team for the team time trial.
I raced on both the road and track in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Trials. Not focusing on a particular discipline probably didn’t do me any favors. Nonetheless, I enjoyed racing so much it was worth the sacrifice to me. My experiences racing on the road and track were some of the most enjoyable times of my life. I had the fortune to race against such notable cyclists as Lance Armstrong and Miguel Indurain.
While in the Air Force, I had the fortune of enjoying the best of both worlds. I was a pilot who flew some incredible aircraft (T-37, T-38, T-41, T-3 and C-141), and I was able to race my bicycle all over the world at the same time. I was a six-time member of the U.S. Military World Championships Cycling team between 1989 and 1996. The racing was sanctioned by CISM (Consiel International du Sport Militaire). I raced against the likes of Axel Merckx, Andrea Collinelli, Jens Voigt, and Richard Virenque among others. And although I was a part-time racer who really didn’t stand a chance of winning against some of the world’s greatest cyclists, it was incredible racing regardless.
Although I retired from cycling officially in 1996, it was during these years of training and competition when I began researching nutrition and performance supplements to increase my strength, endurance, and overall health. I tried countless brands and products. My five-year employment at Hammer Nutrition increased my knowledge in the field of nutrition.
